What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese complementary therapy which is now used by physiotherapists across the world. Acupuncture involves the stimulation of the brain and spinal cord through the use of special needles. The needles are used to target specific pressure points and stimulate nerve endings through-out the body.

How does acupuncture help?

As a result of the stimulation of the brain and spinal cord, the body produces natural pain relieving chemicals. These chemicals, which include endorphins such as melatonin and serotonin, help with the body's natural healing and pain suppressing processes.

For this reason, acupuncture has become a popular form of physical therapy for patients who are experiencing pain or discomfort. Often, acupuncture is applied simultaneously to other forms of both medication and physiotherapy to ensure maximum pain relief and comfort for the patient.

Can acupuncture help me?

Acupuncture can be a suitable treatment for a variety of conditions. Traditional applications include knee pain, arthritis, migraines and nausea as a result of chemotherapy.

What next?

Step 1 - Initial Consultation

We will provide you with an initial consultation which will allow us to establish your requirements as well as assess your medical condition. We are interested in your past medical history, lifestyle and current medication to help guide your treatment plan.

Step 2 - Regular Acupuncture Sessions

After the initial consultation, we will commence a program of regular acupuncture sessions here at our clinic in Barnstaple, North Devon. A typical programme runs for around 6 sessions and these may take place weekly or at greater intervals as required.

Our fully trained acupuncturist is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) and has worked with patients with varying conditions.
