A Guide to Knee Injuries from The Physio Co.

Knee Injuries

For many sportspeople, the most fearful injury is the twisting of the knee. The more severe injuries are often associated with an audible "pop" and a feeling of a tear. One elite sportsman described an ACL injury as 'not so much a pop, but a snapping of a thick elastic band which reverberated through my body'.

Acute (recent) knee injuries generally swell. Often the level of swelling and the speed of swelling will determine the severity of injury. For example the dreaded ACL rupture will swell profusely and immediately where as a meniscal injury will swell moderately over 6-12 hours.

After a knee injury it is important to get an accurate assessment done to try to establish which structure in the knee is damaged. Having an idea of the injury will enable you to devise a prognosis and treatment protocol for what could be the next 6-8 weeks. If you unable to see a physio swiftly after injury try and control the swelling as best you can - use ice and elevation where possible and try to keep the knee moving.
